State Wrestling Update

Wrestling is one of the most demanding sports a young athlete can take on. It requires grit, intestinal fortitude, and relentless determination every time a wrestler steps onto the mat. Wrestlers often fight through pain, sickness, and adversity, pushing themselves beyond their limits in a sport where there is nowhere to hide. Our junior high wrestlers displayed all of those qualities this weekend at the State Wrestling Tournament, where five athletes qualified and three brought home some hardware.

At 65 lbs., Mackson Talley showed as much heart as any wrestler at the State Tournament. After losing in the semifinals, he battled through the wrestlebacks and ultimately placed 6th, bringing home a state medal.

At 75 lbs., Leo Voigts lost a very close semifinal match, 2–0. In the wrestlebacks, Leo bounced back with impressive wins of 12–0 and 3–0 to earn a 3rd place medal, matching his 3rd-place performance from a year ago as a 5th grader.

At 145 lbs., Cam Schneider won his first two matches in the wrestlebacks, pinning his first opponent in 2:11 and his second opponent in 1:50. After falling in the semifinal wrestlebacks, Cam fought like a Warrior and responded with a 12–8 victory to secure a 5th place medal.

The other two state qualifiers, Marcos Borrego and Hunter Tull, both wrestled tough throughout the tournament but fell short of placing.

It’s also worth noting that Talley, Voigts, and Tull all lost to wrestlers who advanced to the finals in their respective weight classes, showing just how competitive the bracket was at this year’s State Tournament.

Special thanks to Head Coach Josh Rupprecht and Assistant Coach Tony Borrego for their leadership, dedication, and the time they invest in developing our wrestlers and building a strong program.
