MAY NEWS

LINCOLN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

May 2008

Lincoln students have had a great year.  We thank all of you parents who helped your students with homework, who made sure they came to school prepared to learn, and who helped all of us do our jobs.  Thank you, also to all of you who helped your students follow our school rules and who were good role models for your children.

We wish all of you a relaxing and fun summer.  Take time to do fun things with your kids.  That can mean reading together, playing together, having picnics together, and even cooking together.  Spending time together doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.  Time is worth much more than money.

PE

In the PE news from last month, you read about the physical fitness testing taking place in grades one through five.  It has been explained to all students that they will be performing fitness test all the way through high school.  Those fitness scores can help you and your families make choices for healthy living.

I am proud of all of the students who have been performing at their highest levels during these assessments.  In fact, there has been a school record broken this spring while testing the mile run.   There has been one entire classroom of students who performed at the minimum level for fitness.  In other words, Mrs. Wright’s fifth graders are all physically fit when it comes to their cardio-vascular endurance and leg strength.  That is an awesome record to break.  At no other time in the past 17 years that I have been at Lincoln, has an entire class met that standard of fitness.  Congratulations, to those fifth graders and all of the other students at Lincoln school who have worked so hard to be fit and healthy.

Cooperative play day is just around the corner and captains have been chosen and teams divided.  We are hoping for good weather but we are also hoping that all students see this play day as an opportunity to show their best character and citizenship.  That means working hard in the classroom with daily assignments and homework.  It also means using all of the safety and respectful skills that we work on to get along with others.  Mrs. Janssen, Mrs. Flowers, Mr. Edinger, all the teachers and staff with parent help work together to make play day a fun a special day for students.  Students, please remember their cooperation when you follow the directions of your fifth grade captain at all of the 15 stations where you will be playing.

Have a safe and healthy summer! Stay active!    Mrs. Blakeman

Kindergarten

We completed our last letter unit in April and have worked our way through the entire alphabet.  For the remainder of the year, we will focus on reviewing letters and their sounds, blending consonants, sounding out simple words, and reading.  We will continue to introduce new sight words until the last week of school.  These words will be used to read our kindergarten readers and to construct simple sentences on our own.  The public library contains many books that use these words in simple sentences.  Letting your child read these books to you is a fun way to review over the summer.

During this last month, our math work will focus on reading, writing, and ordering numbers 10 through 31.  We will also spend time learning how to “count on” from groups of 10.

As we enter our final month of school, we are amazed to see how much your children have changed throughout the year!  They have grown and matured in so many ways!  Hopefully you see this progress also.  We would like to thank all of you for the work you do at home to help prepare your children to learn at school.  You make our job easier by making sure that your children are well rested, fed and to school on time.  Taking the time to complete missed school work, practice basic skills, and read with your child all reinforce how important education is.  You are the most important influence in your child’s life!

Have a safe and enjoyable summer,

Mrs. Folkerts, Mrs. Wayman & Mrs. Williams

Second Grade News

Second graders know how to add and subtract double-digit math problems with regrouping. We have learned about fractions, counting money, and telling time. We are now learning about measurement and before the end of the year we may have time to do a little multiplication. We will complete our reading book and are doing our best in cursive handwriting. Both classes have completed a science unit on Solids, Liquids, and Gases.

On Monday, April 28, we went on our field trip to Peoria Expo Gardens to see the play Cinderella.  After the play, we ate at the Chenoa McDonald’s. Thank you to the parents that helped chaperone. We had a very enjoyable day.

Thank you for all your support and help throughout the year. Only when we work together do we get the very best results. Continue to have your child read and stay active throughout the summer.

Third Grade News

The end of the year is quickly approaching, only three weeks to go. We will be finishing our reading book and completing the targeted chapters in our math book.

We had a wonderful time on our field trip to Miller Park Zoo. We have some end of the year activities we will be enjoying. The Cooperative Play Day and a picnic lunch on the last day of school. Parents, thank you for your support this year and have a fun restful summer!

Fourth Grade News

Mrs. Adcock and Mrs. Green would like to thank all of our parents for their support this year.  Where has the time gone?  It is hard to believe it is May already!

To expand and apply our knowledge of geography, climate, economy, natural resources, and culture, we have begun researching countries of choice outside of the United States.  We will prepare displays and presentations to share with other classes and our parents!  We will be presenting these on May 20th in the library!  Hope you can come check them out!

In Science we are learning about Human Body systems and how they work.  We are creating different posters that will be on display in the hallway to show what organs we have been learning about and how all of these organs work together to keep us moving, breathing, digesting, and circulating.

On May 9th our fourth graders will go on a field trip to the Hult Health Education Center in Peoria for a program entitled Drugs: Choice or Chance. This program focuses on the differences between legal and illegal drugs, healthy and unhealthy behaviors, and the safe use of medicines.  In addition, the harmful effects of tobacco, marijuana, alcohol, and inhalants are discussed.  The students will also be given suggestions of specific strategies to use in dealing with peer pressure and saying “no” to drugs.  In the afternoon that day we will tour the Glen Oak Zoo and note some of the natural habitats of these animals.

We have finished up with our reading series and are starting novel units this month.  We are excited that we will be reading an entire chapter book instead of our weekly reading stories this month!  Be sure to check with your fourth grader and find out how the book is going!  We will still be having daily discussions as well as practicing our reading skills and strategies!

We are very proud of how well our students have done this year with Accelerated Reader!  The majority of our 4th graders have met 100% of the set yearly goal!  This program has encouraged us to read and therefore become better readers.

The weather is turning very nice, and baseball/softball seasons are starting, but please remember to make some time for schoolwork and especially reading!  We need to finish up strong in fourth grade and be prepared for fifth grade! The countdown to summer break is on!
