Missing Files

by Nicholas Aplington

September 06, 2007

Those of you using Windows XP on your classroom computer will find a new and interesting feature for retrieving files you have inadvertently deleted or saved over.  Open the folder where you stored the original file (the file you wish to retrieve).  Right click anywhere in the white space of that folder and select Properties.  You should see this window.

Select the Previous Versions tab.  You'll see the name of your current folder and a series of dates.  Find the date closest to the time which you know there is an existing version of the file you require, then double-click that item.

You should see a folder with a date appended to its name.  Highlight the item you wish to restore and hit CTRL + C to copy that item.  Go back to the original folder and hit CTRL + V to paste the restored item in your folder.  You're all set!
